𝐒𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲

𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭: “𝐼 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑜𝑟𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑑, 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠, 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑢𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑠” (𝗝𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮𝗵 𝟭𝟳:𝟭𝟬, 𝗘𝗦𝗩).

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: In Joshua 7, the Israelites have a terrible experience. This experience teaches the Israelites why they must honor their agreement with God. When the Israelites obey God, they win their wars. When the Israelites disobey God, they lose. The Lord is a mighty Warrior. Israel’s military success depends on God, not on a big army or clever battle plans. When the Lord goes with the Israelites to war, they win.
During the time that the Israelites fought to win the Promised Land, they learned a hard lesson. The lesson they learned was that their worst enemy was within their own camp. The walls and the strong cities were big problems. But the Israelites had a bigger problem than these things. Their problem was that their own people were very stubborn. They didn’t want to do what the Lord asked.
We have the same problem today as we wait for God to give us the things that He promised (1 Peter 1:4; Colossians 3:24). While we wait on the “border” of the Promised Land, God tests our faith. We can pass the test. But only if we give ourselves completely to Jesus.

𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭
➠ The Israelites were defeated at Ai because of two main reasons — 𝐴𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛'𝑠 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒'𝑠 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒. They attacked Ai without asking for God's guidance, trusting their own strength instead of His.

➠ Achan disobeyed God by stealing things that were supposed to be destroyed, hiding them in his tent. Because Israel was one covenant family, one person's sin brought trouble on the whole nation.

➠ God described Achan's actions as lying, stealing, deceiving, and breaking the covenant — showing how serious sin is.

➠ The people could not win battles or have God's blessing while sin remained in the camp. This story teaches that sin, even when hidden, affects not only the sinner but the entire community.

➠ 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Why did Achan's sin cause the whole nation to suffer, and what lesson does this teach about our connection to others in God's family?

𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
1. 𝐺𝑜𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 ℎ𝑖𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑠 𝑢𝑠 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒.

3. 𝑇𝑟𝑢𝑒 𝑣𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑤𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑦 𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑡𝑜 𝐺𝑜𝑑'𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑡.

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧
➠ God did not immediately point out Achan's sin but allowed time for confession and repentance. The investigation started broadly - from all Israel - and narrowed down step by step until it reached Achan.

➠ This showed God's fairness and justice, clearing the innocent while revealing the guilty. Achan had time to admit his sin, but he chose silence, hoping he would not be found out.

➠ God sees everything - even the secrets hidden deep in the heart (Ps. 139:1-16).

➠ Joshua spoke to Achan with compassion, calling him "my son," showing that justice and mercy can go together. Through Joshua's kindness, we see a picture of Jesus - firm against sin, yet loving toward sinners.

𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
1. 𝐺𝑜𝑑'𝑠 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑔𝑢𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑦.

𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬
➠ Joshua asked Achan to give glory to God and confess his sin honestly. True confession honors God because it admits His justice and truth.

➠ Achan's confession came too late - he admitted his sin only after being found out. His words show no sign of true repentance or sorrow for dishonoring God.

➠ Achan's sin began in the heart - he saw, desired, and took the forbidden things, just like Eve did in Eden (Gen. 3:6). His story reminds us that sin often starts with secret desires that grow into actions.

➠ Rahab and Achan made opposite choices - Rahab acted in faith and was saved, while Achan acted in greed and brought ruin. Covetousness leads us to distrust God and chase what He has not given us.

𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞
➠ After Israel's defeat at Ai, God turned their failure into a victory. God gave Joshua a new plan that used Israel's past mistake as part of the strategy.

➠ The soldiers of Ai thought they could win again, but this time, their pride led them into a trap. Joshua and his men pretended to flee, drawing Ai's army out of the city. Then, another group of Israelites entered the empty city and set it on fire.

➠ This victory showed that success comes not from human wisdom but from God's power and guidance. Joshua raised his sword as a sign that God was in control - just like Moses lifted his staff in earlier battles. Though there were no miracles like at Jericho, God's presence and blessing were still behind their success.

➠ Through obedience and renewed faith, Israel turned the "𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫" (place of trouble) into a "door of hope" (Hos. 2:15)

➠ After Israel lost the battle at Ai, Joshua was sad and confused. He asked God why they had crossed the Jordan if they were only going to be defeated.

➠ At first, Joshua complained like the Israelites in the desert. But then, his concern changed — he worried about God's name and reputation. Joshua did not want other nations to think that Israel's God was weak.

➠ God wanted Israel's obedience to show His power to other nations. When Israel disobeyed, it made people doubt God.

➠ Deuteronomy. 4:5-9 reminds Israel that their wise and obedient lives would show others how great their God is. We too must live in a way that helps others see God's love and power.

Achan’s heart filled with terror when he saw that his family group was selected. Then his family line and then his own family members were selected as guilty. Achan said nothing until God announced his guilt. When Achan could no longer hide his sin, he confessed the truth. Many people are the same as Achan. They confess their crimes only when they can’t hide them anymore. Achan confessed that he was wrong, but not because he was sorry for his sin. Achan continued to hide his sin because he hoped he wouldn’t get caught and punished. But Achan’s words showed that his punishment was fair. Achan wasn’t really sorry for his sin. His heart hadn’t changed. He didn’t hate evil.”
